Or My Top Ten reasons why you should read Soulless:
I'm mourning because I can't find my copy of Soulless and it's been two weeks since I last read it. So to cope until I find it I wanted to do a post about it. For those who don’t know Soulless is a novel by Gail Garriger. The story is about Alexia Tarabotti, a preternatural (which means she can make supernatural folk human by touching them), and her figuring out the mystery of the disappearing supernatural folk along side Lord Maccon, head of the BUR department. Now, I could do a formal review about why this book is awesome, but I wanted to do something else. Here are my Top 10 reasons why you should read Soulless:
10) The supernatural folk are not hidden from society. In fact they are at the forefront of society. Lord Maccon? He’s a werewolf and an alpha at that but also head of the BUR and serving under his majesty. One of Alexia’s best friends, Lord Akeldama, is a vampire and very in. The covens, the ghosts and the packs have roles to play in society just like humans do.
9) No supernatural angst. Vampires, humans, werewolves and ghosts are people and all owe respect to the queen and all capable of being good and bad and mostly in between.
8) Lord Akeldama is a flamboyant gay man with a harem of beautiful young men. He’s the most camp gay character I have ever encountered and yet he’s so hilarious. I would love to have tea with him and I hate tea.
"My dearest girl,' said the vampire finally, examining Lord Maccon with an exhausted but appreciative eye, 'such a banquet. Never been one to favor werewolves myself, but he is very well equipped, now, is he not? (Lord Maccon is naked, by the way)
"A vampire, like a lady, never reveals his true age."
7) Alexia kills a vampire with a parasol the first chapter. It was in self defense, but it is still so awesome. How many stories start with death by parasol?
6) The world building is incredible in my opinion. It’s mostly built around gossip and hearsay giving it a gradual feel and some realism.
5) I love how well is the word Soulless used and the idea of souls applied here. Alexia is a Soulless in power, in personality and in creativity. It also brings talk about Souls and how they affect your ability of being a supernatural.
"Cats were not, in her experience, an animal with much soul. Prosaic, practical little creatures as a general rule. It would suit her very well to be thought catlike."
4) Professor Lyall is just awesome. He’s the Beta of the werewolves, a smart sensible man of dry wit. The way he plays off Maccon, who is very emotional, is just a sight to see.
3) Alexia’s father’ and his infamous library. Something about a library built around 19 century porn amuses me.
2) The romance here is great. Alexia doesn't cower for Lord Maccon and always speaks her mind and Lord Maccon doesn't shy away from that and loves her because she's an unbearable woman. Some of the best comedic moments are from this relationship. I do warn you though that things get very... steamy between them but even at those moments the funny never stops which brings my number one reason.
1) The humor of this series if phenomenal. I have read my copy so many times that it’s yellow and I still giggle at everything. When I first read this I had no idea it was humor. I looked insane in the bus since I just couldn't stop laughing or reading.
If you have nothing to read and like supernatural stuff give it a chance.
